Sinopse: Los Angeles, 1962, no pico da Crise dos Mísseis de Cuba. George Falconer (Colin Firth) é um professor universitário de 52 anos, a tentar encontrar de novo um sentido para a vida, depois da morte do seu companheiro de sempre, Jim (Matthew Goode). George mergulha no passado e não consegue imaginar o seu futuro, quando o acompanhamos durante um único dia, onde uma série de encontros e acontecimentos o levam a decidir se afinal haverá ou não sentido para a vida depois de Jim. George é consolado pela sua amiga chegada Charley (Julianne Moore), uma beldade de 48 anos, também ela a lutar com as suas próprias questões acerca do futuro. E um jovem estudante de George, Kenny (Nicholas Hoult), que se está a aceitar como ele é, persegue George, vendo nele uma alma gémea…
